Members Travel to Albany to Lobby Legislators

Almost 200 members journeyed to Albany on March 10, as part of the Share Better coalition, to lobby legislators. The members—and others—split into groups and met with more than 50 members of the New York State Assembly and Senate to express concerns about illegal hotels, illegal apartment rentals and Airbnb, the company whose web service helps enables these violations of the law.
Health Centers’ Be Well Feel Well Event Is Next Week

Be Well Feel Well—the first Health and Wellness event of 2015, will take place at the Health and Dental Centers Monday, March 23 through Friday, March 27. Each year this event is an important part of the effort to keep members and their families in the best health possible, and it will be no different this year.

The W-2 forms have been distributed and the clock is now ticking. There are less than 40 days remaining until the April 15 IRS filing deadline. The IRS has already announced that refunds will take longer this year due to budget cuts, so those who are expecting refunds should file earlier rather than later.

Calling it a “Fight for Fair Pay,” the Governor said it’s time New York took the progressive step of restoring respect and dignity to the state’s working poor

Los formularios W-2 se han distribuido y ya comienza la cuenta regresiva. Hay menos de 40 días restantes hasta la fecha límite del IRS, el 15 de abril. El IRS ya ha anunciado que los reembolsos llevarán más tiempo este año, debido a los recortes presupuestarios, por lo que aquellos que están esperando reembolsos deberían presentar sus formularios de declaración de impuestos lo más temprano posible.
Union Wins Back Pay at Surrey Hotel

There are protections in the contract against layoffs out of seniority and managers doing the work of laid off members, as the Surrey Hotel recently learned. Here, as a result of action taken by the Union, three HTC members from the Surrey are receiving checks for back pay from Local 6 Business Agent Dorota Horwitt.

Union’s 2015 Writing Contest Offers Cash Prizes to High School Students

The Union has announced that the 2015 writing contest for high school students is now underway. This competition is beginning at an earlier time of the year than it has in the past, and that’s because it also has an earlier deadline. The deadline for submitting entries to the 2015 writing competition is Friday, June 19. No entries will be accepted after that date.
