2015 Writing Contest Rules and Entry Procedures

The 2015 writing contest is open to all children and eligible dependents of Hotel Trades Council and/or Local 6 members. Prizes of $2,000 for first place, $1,000 for second place and $300 for third place will be awarded in each of the three categories detailed below.

Remembering Fred Cristina, a Plaza Hotel Employee for 64 Years

The Union lost an old friend last month, when Fred Cristina passed away at the age of 94. Fred was a member of our Union almost from its first day, beginning work at the Plaza Hotel in 1939. By the time he retired, in 2003, Fred had logged an extraordinary total of 64 years on the job at the Plaza—minus a few years while he was performing dedicated service to our country during World War II.

With February designated as Black History Month it is an appropriate time to look back on the heroic actions taken by these nine brave men. The Friendship Nine were made to pay for their “crime” of sitting at a “whites only” lunch counter in Rock Hill, North Carolina on January 31, 1961.

Pod Hotel Employees Have Their First HTC Contract!

We are happy to report that employees of the Pod Hotel have their first HTC contract! Negotiations took place over a period of more than a year and the agreement that was reached through those talks was recently ratified unanimously by the employees

Hundreds of members of our Union were joined by many members of the public at a January 20th New York City Council hearing regarding the law that prohibits people from renting out their apartments for under 30 days.

The January 20 New York City Council hearing on the law prohibiting illegal hotels and illegal apartment rentals drew a tremendous crowd that included members of community coalitions, affordable housing advocates, Share Better, and concerned citizens who came on their own, as well as hundreds of members of our Union.

When the 115th U.S. Congress convened last week for the first time, the new and larger House Republican majority got to work immediately, taking a step that could mean some 11 million people who receive Social Security disability benefits will see their safety net benefits cut by 20% in 2016. It could even mean cuts to Social Security retirement benefits as well.
