Reminder: Vito J. Pitta Scholarship Application Deadline Is April 1
This is a reminder that the deadline for submitting applications for this year’s Vito J. Pitta scholarship awards is 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 1, making this one of the last notices to parents and students.
The Vito J. Pitta scholarship awards competition is open to children of members of the Hotel Trades Council employed in non-Division A shops, as well as children of Local 6 members who are employed in most private clubs. There is a list of participating private clubs included with the Eligibility Information Form that is published in this edition of
Hotel Voice. Hotel Trades Council members employed in Division A shops are NOT eligible for the Vito J. Pitta scholarship awards but have a separate scholarship program with a later deadline (May 15, 2015) for submitting applications.
It is also important to remember that in order to be eligible to participate in the Vito J. Pitta scholarship competition members’ children must be graduating high school seniors who will be attending an accredited four-year college or university in the fall of 2015.
Because the deadline for submitting applications is two weeks away, it is strongly recommended that members and/or their children act immediately. There are various factors in the application process that make it virtually impossible to apply for the scholarship in just one or two days. As a result, members are urged to act now if their eligible children or dependents have not yet applied for the scholarship. Please also remember that children who have received applications but have not yet completed the application process must do so by no later than April 1. There will be no exceptions to these rules.
Because of the April 1 deadline for receipt of applications, this is one of the last chances for members’ children to take advantage of the wonderful opportunity the scholarship program affords. If you are a Union hotel worker or a Local 6 member employed in clubs, please don’t let your child miss out on the opportunity for a scholarship.
Last year a total of 35 graduating high school seniors received Vito J. Pitta scholarships amounting to $280,000. Since the program began in 1987, a total of 920 children of Hotel Trades Council members employed in hotels and Local 6 members employed in private clubs have received a total of $7,360,000 in college scholarships. It is money well spent. Every member of our Union should be proud of the fact that virtually every previous scholarship winner has succeeded. Almost all of these scholars have either completed their studies or are still attending college or graduate school.
As we have said do often in the past, the Vito J. Pitta Scholarship program can often make the difference in allowing your child to attend the college or university of his or her choice or even whether to attend college at all. But the only way to obtain one of these financial awards is by submitting a completed application by the April 1 deadline to enter the competition. If your child is a graduating high school senior planning to attend an accredited four-year college or university this coming fall, make sure that he or she takes advantage of the opportunity to join the prestigious group of previous winners by applying for one of our Union’s scholarships.
As a reminder, not everyone who enters the competition will win a scholarship. For that reason, there is additional information often published in Hotel Voice that describes various resources available to help pay for college.
Again, this is one of the last notices to students regarding this year’s Vito J. Pitta scholarship competition. Interested students should act quickly to ensure that they submit their applications by the Wednesday, April 1, 2015 deadline. To receive an application or to ask any questions you may have, please visit or call the Scholarship Program, which is located in Long Island City at 43-47 37th Street, just around the corner from the Queens Health Center and just 10 minutes from Midtown Manhattan on the 7 train. The phone number for the Scholarship Fund is 718-361-5100, extension 3600.
And we wish the very best of luck to all students that apply!
