In early September, after nearly six months of being shuttered due to COVID-19, New York Governor Cuomo permitted the state’s casinos to reopen at 25% capacity and 3,000 unionized casino workers returned to work.
While non-union hotel and gaming workers across the country face hazardous working conditions amidst COVID-19, HTC-represented casino workers are in the very rare position where their protections on the job have gotten stronger and their wages and benefits have improved during the pandemic. Contract wins at Chicago, Honolulu and San Francisco Hiltons
After fierce battles with the Hilton Hotel Corporation, hotel workers at UNITE HERE locals in Chicago, San Francisco, and Honolulu have won new contracts. The workers stayed the course for 19 months in Chicago and San Francisco, and 9 months in Honolulu. They made their determination to win strong contracts known by engaging in demonstrations, picketing, temporary strikes, and boycotts.

Lisa Sinishtaj became a member of our Union in 2018. At the time, she was working at Resorts World Catskills, one of the ten gaming locations that have joined our ranks over the last decade. Union Wins Contract at the AKA Wall Street Hotel
On December 7, 2016, AKA Wall Street employees unanimously ratified the Industry Wide Agreement (IWA), joining over 30,000 other hotel workers in New York City covered by the contract.
Courtyard Newark Downtown Wins Union Contract!
The Union has won a contract for the Hotel Trades Council (HTC) members employed at the Courtyard Newark Downtown Hotel. The hotel joined the rapidly growing list of shops in New Jersey that are bound to the Greater Regional Industry Wide Agreement, or GRIWA.
Details of Federal COBRA Subsidy Still Being Worked Out
Under the American Rescue Plan, the federal government plans to pay 100% of the cost of COBRA for many laid off workers for the next six months, from April 1, 2021 through September 30, 2021. This means that many of you (and your families) can return to our Union’s health centers soon, for free. It also means that we will be able to reopen the Brooklyn and Harlem health centers, which had to temporarily close in January. Read more...
HTC Marches In Solidarity with CUNY and SUNY For Free, Accessible Education in the State of New York!
On Sunday, March 6, HTC members marched from Brooklyn Borough Hall to Foley Square in Manhattan in solidarity with the Professional Staff Congress (PSC- CUNY) that represents 30,000 staff in the City University of New York. For over four decades, the PSC has been committed to improving the quality and accessibility of education within CUNY and has strived towards better wages and benefits for the staff. This past Sunday, we marched for free higher education and to call for more funding for CUNY and SUNY universities, funding that will go towards their academic departments and hiring more full-time faculty.
