Building Trades supports Kingsbridge redevelopment after winning 1000 union jobs

The Building & Construction Trades Council of Greater New York announced its support of the Kingsbridge Armory redevelopment October 23 after winning a guarantee from the developers that the 1,000 construction jobs the project will create will be union jobs.

Let’s Look at the Issues

A recent survey by the Employee Benefit Research Institute shows that a financially secure retirement remains a huge concern for many American workers. There should be concern. The same survey shows that 57% of all U.S. working men and women have less than $25,000 saved for retirement. Even worse, 28% of all U.S. working men and women have less that $1,000 saved for retirement. This was the seventh straight year that the percentage of American workers with little or no retirement savings increased.

Elected Officials Comment on Resorts World Contract

The news that 1,375 workers at the Resorts World racino in Queens had a contract received wide attention in the media. Much of that attention was due to the fact that the contract nearly doubled wages immediately and will nearly triple wages by 2016. The contract was also featured in television ads urging a yes vote for casino gaming in New York, showing that Resorts World workers had good-paying jobs with benefits. The voters of New York obviously agreed. But in addition to all the media attention, the contract at Resorts World also drew comments from a number of elected officials.

$2 Trillion Federal coronavirus stimulus package


Your union is closely watching the federal $2 Trillion Coronavirus Stimulus Bill. We want to thank all our members that called their senators in the last few days. The text of the bill is not yet final, but here you will find the details that the Senate Democrats just released, which outlines where things stand currently. The Senate still has not printed a bill or voted on it. It will then go to the House, to be voted on.

Update: Stimulus plan is signed into law

The $2 trillion dollar stimulus was approved by the House unchanged and was signed into law by the President.

The law will send a $1,200 check to people earning up to $75,000 ($2,400 for joint filers earning up to than $150,000 combined) and an additional $500 per child. People earning between $75,000 and $99,000 would receive prorated checks. Click here to calculate how much money you may receive. Our understanding is that people who can receive direct deposits will get these checks much faster. We will look into details to see how more of you can try to get direct deposits.
