Kwame Appiah

Our union mournfully announces the passing of Kwame Appiah, a union member who worked as a Houseman at the Night Hotel Broadway for 22 years.

Kwame's coworker Lionel, who worked with him for 22 years, recalled fondly that Kwame would be quiet at work, but he would be the first one on the dance floor at parties.

Kwame was known by those who loved him as a quiet man – hardworking, giving, and funny. His younger sister Augustina described how Kwame could “make you laugh within minutes.” When they were younger, Kwame would sprinkle water over her school things as if he were blessing them, saying that this would make sure nobody would touch them.

Kwame was a food-lover, with Lionel emphasizing that “when it comes to food, he don’t joke.” He also loved to watch soccer, especially the Ghanian national team.

Kwame worked to help support his children and grandchildren in Ghana, a choice Augustina described as selfless and something he was proud of. Kwame is survived by five children, 15 grandchildren, and two sisters. “We’re really gonna miss him,” said Augustina.
