2023 College Scholarship Winners

Hotel Voice, Summer 2023

The Union’s scholarship program is one of the hard-won rights that members went on strike to gain during our historic contract fight in 1985. In the decades since, the program has awarded over $9.6 million to cover the education expenses of more than 1,100 children of HTC and Local 6 members.

On June 26th, 35 such children gathered with their families in the Gotham Park Ballroom of the Intercontinental Times Square to celebrate their accomplishments as scholarship winners from the Class of 2023. The resilience demonstrated by this class was nothing short of extraordinary, as these students faced a tidal wave of challenges to their studies as a result of the pandemic.

Accomplished athletes, artists, scholars, and organizers — these scholarship recipients all demonstrated devotion to their education

and their respective communities. We eagerly anticipate the fantastic achievements they will make as they pursue a higher education and beyond.

Special Thanks to the Gabelli Family

We would like to express our deepest gratitude to Mr. Mario Gabelli and his daughter Elisa Gabelli Wilson. Mr. Gabelli’s father Joseph was a cherished member of Local 6 who worked as a sous chef in a number of shops. This year the family once again generously contributed to our Union's scholarship fund. To date, Mr. Gabelli's cumulative donations to the scholarship fund exceed $700,000.

"Education has always held a revered place in my family's narrative. My parents saw it as a transformative force that shapes our identity and future, and both had to overcome substantial obstacles in order to get an education. My father fled Poland and essentially became a refugee, taking a circuitous route that ultimately led him to Brazil. As a teenager, he learned Portuguese to pass the challenging medical school entrance—where he met my mother. Facing a different barrier, my mother was one of only two women in her entire class. Both graduated as physicians and emigrated to the U.S., seeing education as their gateway to better opportunities and to better help others.

Their dedication didn’t end with their achievements. They instilled in me the immense value of education, ensuring I had the same opportunities they fought for. Today, I hope to pass this legacy to my children. Like many here, I believe education is the key to unlocking life’s doors. We revel in the pride of your academic accomplishments and celebrate each step towards your aspirations and your futures."

- HTC President Rich Maroko
