The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) ruled that McDonald’s can be held jointly liable for the wage and labor violations of its franchise operators. Franchising, a wide-spread business model in the fast food industry, and a rapidly growing business model in the hospitality industry, is a tool companies like McDonald’s can use to side-step the legal liability associated with violating U.S. labor law and to stymie employees’ attempts to unionize.

Hyatt Times Square newly unionized

On June June 5, 2014 the workers at the Hyatt Times Square officially became members of the Hotel Trades Council. Room Attendant Lorena Garcia commented “I can’t tell you how thrilled I am about this. This is a great new hotel, and now that we all have the union, I know I will have stability at this job in the future.”

HTC supports 32BJ at rally for fair contract

On April 2nd, nearly 600 HTC members marched up Park Avenue with several other unions to show solidarity with 32BJ and their demand for a fair contract. The property service union’s contract expires on April 20th. With 32BJ's 70,000 NYC members facing increasing costs of living, the new contract would ensure that these union members will continue to provide for their families.

Clarion Empire by Meadowlands Workers Unanimously Ratify First HTC Contract

Jubilant workers at the Clarion Empire Hotel by Meadowlands in Secaucus, New Jersey unanimously ratified their first HTC Union contract on Thursday, November 21st. It is by far the best contract ever won for the workers at the Clarion, who were previously represented by the (now defunct) Local 96 until 2010. The new contract doubles yearly wage increases for workers, substantially expands their rights and protections, and guarantees free health care for the life of the contract.

Midtown East rezoning proposal Is halted

On Wednesday November 12th, 2013 the proposal to rezone Midtown East was halted, when it became clear that the New York City Council was going to reject the proposal as it was currently designed. Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio and other elected officials said the plan will be revisited next year, when changes are sure to be made.

IUF and HTC rally to support Turkish aviation workers

On Friday November 8th, 2013 HTC rallied to show solidarity with 305 dismissed aviation workers in Turkey. The rally took place in front of the Empire State building where Turkish Airlines American corporate offices are based. HTC staff and members, along with IUF and Unite Here staff, chanted and raised the IUF flag high, sending a strong message to the workers that union members in New York support their struggle.

Bill de Blasio elected mayor by landslide margin

On November 5th, 2013 New Yorkers showed that they are ready for progressive change. By a landslide margin of 49%, they voted to make Bill de Blasio our city’s next Mayor. This resounding victory sent a message that New Yorkers want change, giving de Blasio a clear mandate to tackle the affordable housing crisis, education, and to repair the relationship between New Yorkers and the City's Police Force.
