College Scholarships Awarded to 22 High School Seniors

There haven't been many good news items in 2020, with the COVID-19 crisis leaving so many of our union's members out of work, but the annual scholarship awards for this year can give all of us hope for the future. A total of $264,000 has been awarded to 22 promising students who are children of our union's members. Congratulations to these scholars and to their parents!

As we have reported in Hotel Voice the last two weeks, the hotel industry’s annual blood drive will be held on Tuesday, May 26th, between the hours of 12:00 noon. and 6:00 p.m. at the DoubleTree by Hilton Metropolitan Hotel, 569 Lexington Ave. (between 50th and 51st Streets) in the Metro 3 Room on the mezzanine level.

After a long battle in the courts, the Supreme Court ruled on Tuesday, October 13, 2020, that the Census Bureau could go through with its plan to end the outreach efforts of the 2020 Census early, despite millions of Americans being left uncounted. The Census Bureau has announced that Thursday, October 15, 2020 will be the last day to complete the Census.

Edward Fazio, Pierre Hotel and Waldorf Astoria
Our brother, Edward Fazio, a food and beverage storeroom attendant at the Pierre Hotel for three years, passed away suddenly on April 21st, 2020. Edward had worked for over 20 years at the Waldorf Astoria as a breakfast banquet cook. He was 62.
Michael Greeley, who worked with “Eddie” at the Waldorf for many years, said that he was a “super nice guy and very reliable.” Michael remembers Eddie talking about all the different jobs he had before he became a cook and a proud Union member.

Paladino says Jewish politician Sheldon Silver “‘fits the bill of an Antichrist or a Hitler’”
An article in the October 27, 2009, Niagara Falls Gazette recounted how an Erie County politician had earlier apologized and called a "'poor joke'" his having compared Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, an Orthodox Jew, "to Adolf Hitler and the Antichrist." This same article reported that Carl Paladino told attendees, at a public forum sponsored by the Niagara County Patriots, he didn't think the politician should have apologized.
