Fighting For Social Justice Since 1939

The Hotel Trades Council, AFL-CIO (HTC), has a rich and proud history as a progressive, fighting union. For more than 80 years, it has made life better for literally hundreds of thousands of hotel workers and the members of their families.

HTC was founded in the late 1930's in a massive campaign to organize workers in the New York City hotel industry.

The Story Behind the GRIWA

When HTC’s jurisdiction was expanded in 2010, it inherited hotels with weak contracts, low wages and benefits, and workers who were not impressed by the union representation they were receiving. After several difficult contract fights to improve upon these poor conditions, HTC set out with a plan to imitate the success that HTC has achieved in New York City by organizing more hotels to expand union density and by establishing a new master contract for the region similar to the IWA in New York City.

Some union hotels apply for PPP Loans

A few Union hotels have applied for Paycheck Protection Program loans (“PPP loans”). These loans are an incentive for businesses to keep their employees on the payroll during the Coronavirus crisis.

If your hotel receives a PPP loan and begins to pay you, the New York State Department of Labor has instructed that you should simply stop certifying for unemployment benefits for the weeks that you receive paychecks. For more tips when applying for unemployment in New York, click here.

Marriage Equality Act passes in historic 33-29 vote

On Friday, June 24, 2011, the New York State Senate passed the Marriage Equality Act, voting 33-29 to allow same sex marriages in our state. Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the bill into law at 11:55 pm, enabling it to become law within an hour and a half of the Senate approving it.
