There is no corner of the globe where this pandemic hasn’t spread. And while we all share many common hardships, we also each feel the impact on a personal and individual level.
For our Union, and our members, we find ourselves in the midst of what are undoubtedly the darkest days in the 82-year history of our Union. Our industry is almost entirely closed down, something that has never happened before — not during the Great Depression of the 1930s, not during the world wars, and not after the terrorist attacks of 9/11. Meet the 2013 Vito J. Pitta Scholarship Winners
A few weeks ago, Hotel Voice provided the names of the 2013 recipients of the Vito J. Pitta scholarships. A total of 35 graduating high school seniors received $280,000 in college grant money this year, and the program overall has now awarded a total of $7,080,000 to 885 students since its inception.
Hyatt Times Square newly unionized
On June June 5, 2014 the workers at the Hyatt Times Square officially became members of the Hotel Trades Council. Room Attendant Lorena Garcia commented “I can’t tell you how thrilled I am about this. This is a great new hotel, and now that we all have the union, I know I will have stability at this job in the future.”

Ernie Peters, HTC Regional Director and Local 6 Vice President
The union was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Ernie Peters, a longtime HTC Regional Director and a Local 6 Business Agent and Vice President. Peters passed away on May 26. He was 85 years old and had been a member of our union for 68 years.
Throughout his long tenure at our union Peters was a strong representative of our members and a fierce enforcer of the contract. He was well respected by members and management alike.

3,000 HTC-represented casino workers return to work, many to even better jobs than before

In early September, after nearly six months of being shuttered due to COVID-19, New York Governor Cuomo permitted the state’s casinos to reopen at 25% capacity and 3,000 unionized casino workers returned to work.
While non-union hotel and gaming workers across the country face hazardous working conditions amidst COVID-19, HTC-represented casino workers are in the very rare position where their protections on the job have gotten stronger and their wages and benefits have improved during the pandemic.
