Harlem Health Center Reopens With Limited Services!

The Union’s Harlem health center reopens August 16th, after being temporarily closed since the beginning of this year. As many members will recall, the Harlem health center had to temporarily close in January, due to the reduced size of the active workforce. Given the high volume of members returning to our healthcare, either because they are returning to work or through the free COBRA subsidy, the facility is now able to reopen. With the reopening of Harlem, all five locations are now open, with Brooklyn and Harlem offering limited services to start. Read more...

Unions unite to elect Bill de Blasio mayor of New York

The results of primary day left our Union with a choice to make. But, as Peter Ward told a special Delegate Assembly meeting on Wednesday, September 11, the choice was not too difficult. The delegates enthusiastically agreed, and the Union is supporting the campaign of Bill de Blasio for Mayor of New York. Other unions are doing the same. In fact, while different unions endorsed different candidates leading up to the primary, almost all of them came together on the steps of Brooklyn’s Borough Hall on September 12 to say, “Bill de Blasio’s the one!”

Eric Adams, Our Choice for NYC Mayor

By HTC President Rich Maroko

In February, our Union endorsed Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams in his campaign for New York City mayor.

This election may be the most consequential one we’ve faced since we started our Union’s political program 15 years ago. The leaders we elect this year will decide how to rebuild our City’s economy, drive tourism, and reopen the hotel industry after the COVID-19 pandemic. They will have a huge say over how working people – and our members – are treated during the economic recovery. If that weren’t reason enough to take these elections seriously, in all likelihood, whoever wins the mayoral election will also be elected to a second term. That means that the mayor who is elected this year will likely be in power when our industry-wide contract expires in 2026. Read more...

NYC’s hotel boom far from over

As reported in the NY Observer development of new hotels is moving ahead at an astounding pace.

City wide boom in hotel development continues

According to a recent article on the popular real estate blog, DNAinfo.com, a new hotel, which bills itself as "tapping into [Bushwick's] 'Raw Feeling of Creativity'" will open in spring of 2015. The 116-room Bklyn House Hotel is just one of the many non-union hotels slated to open in 2015, which means the only thing that's raw about the place is the poverty pay deal it will likely offer its employees.
