On the Ballot: The Survival of the American Labor Movement

October 27, 2020 10:59 AM

Many Americans understand that a vote for the President is, in effect, a vote on the future of the U.S. Supreme Court, whose rulings will affect our civil liberties and rights for years to come. But Supreme Court Justices are not the only presidential appointees that have significant power over the lives of the American people. A group of lesser known presidential appointees that are effectively “on the ballot” each election are those to the National Labor Relations Board (“NLRB”). These appointees are responsible for protecting the rights of American workers to organize, join a union, and collectively bargain over their wages, benefits, and working conditions.

As working people cast their ballots this election, they will be voting on the very survival of the American labor movement.

Anti-Asian hate crimes surge amid COVID-19 pandemic

May 22, 2020 10:05 AM

The international medical community has established guidelines to specifically avoid labelling illnesses after locations because doing so has proven to promote another plague – violent hate around the globe. In keeping with that intelligent policy, in February, the World Health Organization (WHO) named the strain of coronavirus which is causing this pandemic “COVID-19.”

However, despite that fact, right-wing politicians and media figures are inciting their followers to blame this disaster on anti-Chinese conspiracy theories by frequently referring to COVID-19 as “the Chinese virus,” or the “Wuhan virus.”

The shamelessly race-baiting rhetoric and ignorance has been responsible for an exponential rise in anti-Asian hate crimes in the last 3 months, including cyber-bullying, verbal abuse, and physical assaults such as being spit on, coughed on, and much worse.

A special moment took place at the December meeting of the Local 6 Delegate Assembly, when for only the fourth time in its 81-year history the union bestowed an honorary membership. The recipient of the honorary membership was Mario Gabelli, whose generous support for the Hotel Trades Council's scholarship fund has allowed for more awards and larger grants. Mr. Gabelli's father, Joseph Gabelli, was a charter member of both Local 6 and the Hotel Trades Council.

HTC at the 1963 March on Washington

The 1963 March on Washington is one of the most celebrated moments in the Civil Rights Movement. Organized by a coalition of civil rights organizations and progressive unions, the march brought over 250,000 people from around the country to support the passage of civil rights legislation. The march is perhaps best known for Martin Luther King's "I have a dream" speech, and is widely credited with contributing to the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Fighting for Affordable Child Care

For working parents, child care is an absolute necessity. Without it, holding down a full-time job is nearly impossible. Unfortunately, the cost of child care today is shockingly high and access is increasingly challenging.

Our Union is working to make child care affordable and more accessible for our members – through contract negotiations, legislation, and partnerships with other non-profits and coalition groups. There aren’t any simple, quick solutions. This effort will take time and all the tools at our disposal. Read more...

Carlos Lopez, Warwick Hotel and Local 6 Vice President

Carlos Lopez, a fixture at the offices of HTC and Local 6 for more than 30 years, passed away on April 24. He leaves behind his son, Carlos Lopez Jr., his daughter-in-law, Diana, and grandchildren Matteo and Natalia. Lopez was 84 at the time of his death.

The news was greeted with great sadness by veteran members of our Union, but many of them also had very fond recollections of Lopez.

Let’s look at the issues

The array of world leaders that journeyed to South Africa this week was a great tribute to Nelson Mandela. The biggest tribute of all, however, would be if these same world leaders learned to exercise the same ideals that Mandela did. He was a man of peace. He was a symbol of hope. He was the definition of reconciliation.
