Republican “HEALS” Act is really the “HURTS Act”

Back in May, the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives passed the HEROES Act, a comprehensive bill that would extend the emergency increase of $600/week in unemployment benefits through January 31, grant nearly $1 trillion dollars in emergency support for local and state governments, fund and expand programs to help working people during this crisis, and shore up the teetering U.S. economy. 

For over two and a half months, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and the Republican-controlled Senate have refused to vote on - or even debate - the HEROES Act, and they have also exhibited no sense of urgency to propose their own bill.

On Monday, July 27th, McConnell finally released a Republican proposal: the “HEALS Act.” The inaptly named bill fails miserably to address the current crisis facing many Americans. Read more...

Members Rally With Governor Cuomo and Bon Jovi to Raise the Minimum Wage

On Thursday June 11th, hundreds of HTC members were joined by dozens of activists from other unions and local community groups at the Hotel Trades Council’s Manhattan Headquarters for a rally to raise the minimum wage for fast food workers, organized by Governor Andrew Cuomo.

Dominick Pugliese, Marriott Brooklyn Bridge

The Union is deeply saddened to announce the passing of our brother Dominick Pugliese, a housekeeping aide at the Marriott Brooklyn Bridge since 2001.

Known by all as an enthusiastic worker who cared deeply about the people around him, Dominick was adored by his co-workers, family and friends. He was also passionate about sports, especially the Yankees, Giants and Knicks. A devoted father to his three children, Dominick was immensely proud of his daughter Ashley in college.

In receiving this honor, which is named after the late Margaret Browning, a prominent labor attorney and member of the National Labor Relations Board, Maroko joins other giants of labor including Baseball Players Association Founder Marvin Miller, former NYS Governor Basil Patterson, former NYS AFL-CIO President Dennis Hughes, and OPEIU President and HTC Vice President Richard Lanigan.

City Council leader has high praise for HTC health benefits

In the annual State of the City speech, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn cited the Hotel Trades Council's health benefits program as a model for providing workers high quality healthcare.

Division A Members Ratify Contract Extension

A large number of Hotel Trades Council Division A members voted overwhelmingly on October 15 to approve a contract extension similar to the extension of the IWA approved in June by their brother and sister HTC members employed in non-Division A hotels.
