A Report from HTC President Rich Maroko:

There is no corner of the globe where this pandemic hasn’t spread. And while we all share many common hardships, we also each feel the impact on a personal and individual level.

For our Union, and our members, we find ourselves in the midst of what are undoubtedly the darkest days in the 82-year history of our Union. Our industry is almost entirely closed down, something that has never happened before — not during the Great Depression of the 1930s, not during the world wars, and not after the terrorist attacks of 9/11. Almost 90% of our members are laid off. No one can say when business will come back or when life will return to normal. Read more...

Scab Rebecca Friedrichs Featured Speaker at Republican Convention

October 25, 2020 4:25 PM

In the first ten minutes on the first night of its 2020 National Convention, the Republican Party featured a notorious anti-union former teacher, Rebecca Friedrichs, to deliver a vitriolic attack against labor unions. Friedrichs was the plaintiff in the 2016 Supreme Court case Friedrichs v. California Teachers Association, which aimed to defund and weaken public sector labor unions across the country.

At on time or another, as union members, many of us have run into a treacherous co-worker who is eager to lick the boots of their boss. There’s a term for such a character – scab. That’s Ms. Friedrichs in a nutshell.

The Republican Party’s choice of Ms. Friedrichs as the second speaker in its convention is a disturbing signal that the GOP is now even more hostile to the rights of workers than it has ever been. Read more...

An In-Depth Look at the Career of HTC’s New President, Rich Maroko

August 12, 2020 4:04 PM

By Former President Peter Ward

When I announced to the General Officers and Executive Boards of HTC and Local 6 and the Local 6 Delegate Assembly that I had decided to retire, I recommended that Rich Maroko be appointed to fill my vacant offices. I explained to them the many reasons why I believed Rich’s appointment would be good for our Union.

The purpose of this report is to provide you with the same detailed description of Rich’s biography and career with HTC and Local 6. Most of you who know him, know how hard-fighting and smart he is and how much he cares about our members, but I think it is accurate to assume that you do not have as complete a knowledge of his many accomplishments on behalf of our Union as I have. Here Are the 2019 Writing Contest Winners

In an exercise that showed the enormous talent in our union family, high school students from grades 10 through 12 submitted scores of entries into the 2019 writing competition. We’re glad they did.

More than half the essays and almost half of the narratives written by the students had immigration as their subject, and many of those explained how the union benefited their families. The Second Amendment, modern day heroes and the politicizing of the U.S. Supreme Court were also popular essay topics, and there were quite a large number of poignant essays and narratives about self-discovery.
