The Hotel Trades Council, AFL-CIO has successfully concluded early negotiations for a new Industry-Wide Agreement with the Hotel Association of New York City, Inc. (the organization that represents the city's hotel owners), covering about 21,000 of the union's 32,000 members.

What the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire means for workers today.
In states nationwide, working people are protesting the actions to strip them of collective bargaining. The Triangle fire and the Upper Big Branch explosion a century later make clear to me that workers want and need that voice. Collective bargaining still means a seat at the table to discuss issues such as working conditions, workplace safety and workplace innovation, empowering individuals to do the best job they can. And it means dignity and a chance for Americans to earn a better life.
HTC Member Lisa Sinishtaj on Organizing Resorts World Hudson Valley
Lisa Sinishtaj became a member of our Union in 2018. At the time, she was working at Resorts World Catskills, one of the ten gaming locations that have joined our ranks over the last decade. At the end of last year, Lisa transferred to the new Resorts World Hudson Valley in Newburgh, NY, where she played a role in helping 200 of her coworkers win Union representation – and the benefits that come with it. Lisa sat down for an interview with the Hotel Voice to discuss the Union’s most recent victory in the Hudson Valley. Read more...
After a Grueling Anti-Union Campaign, Union Election Begins for Amazon Workers in Alabama
On Monday, February 8th, Amazon warehouse workers in Bessemer, Alabama began casting their ballots to join the Retail, Wholesale, and Department Store Union (RWDSU). If a majority of Bessemer workers vote for the union, the warehouse will become the first unionized Amazon facility in the country.
Amazon has relentlessly campaigned against the union. The company’s no holds barred union-busting tactics unfortunately come as no surprise to our Union. For over 80 years, hotel workers in New York City have had to endure similar intimidation, surveillance, and a barrage of lies from employers when organizing.
Minutes into his presidency, Biden ousts union-buster Peter Robb
Just 23 minutes after being inaugurated as the 46th President of the United States, President Biden asked Peter Robb to resign from his position as General Counsel of the National Labor Relations Board (“NLRB”). When Robb refused, Biden fired him. Robb, a high-profile union buster, was considered by many to be the most dangerous General Counsel to oversee the NLRB in decades. Removing him was a critical first step toward leveling the playing field for America’s workers. Read more...
NYC City Council passes and Mayor de Blasio signs law protecting hotel workers and guests
September 30, 2020 3:10 PM
Last Wednesday, by a vote of 45 to 4, the NYC City Council passed, and on Monday, Mayor Bill de Blasio signed, a new law which will provide vital security for New York City hotel workers, and which will also greatly enhance consumer protections for people traveling to our city.
HTC President Rich Maroko commented, “40,000 HTC members and their families applaud and thank the mayor, the speaker, and all our friends in the City Council for acting decisively to enact critical measures to prevent a small, unscrupulous segment of the hotel owners in this city from exploiting the COVID-19 disaster to profiteer. We are fortunate to have elected officials in this city and state who have acted courageously and responsibly in these terrible times.” Read more...
Joseph Chinchilla, Empire City Casino at Yonkers Raceway
The Union is mourning the loss of our brother Joseph Chinchilla, a cage cashier at MGM Empire City Casino in Yonkers. Joseph is remembered as a funny, warm, and caring presence at work.
Divine Rapay, another cage cashier who worked closely with Joseph, remembers him as a beloved coworker and a great conversationalist. “My deepest sympathy to Joe’s family. His passing was a shock to all of us!,” she explained. “I enjoyed working with him so much. I’m going to miss talking to him, and I’m going to miss his hearty laugh. Rest In peace Joe!”

Not even monsoon-like rains could keep hundreds of members from packing a room at the Newark Hilton Penn Station on April 16 to celebrate the ratification of the new Greater Regional Industry Wide Contract, also known as the GRIWA.
It was a boisterous crowd and everyone was in a celebratory mood.
The meeting was opened by HTC General Counsel and Executive Vice President Richard Maroko, who explained in the simplest terms what the contract meant.
