Union Uses Political Influence to Propel Reopenings

Since March of 2020, when the COVID-19 crisis decimated our industry, our Union has aggressively and tirelessly worked and fought to accomplish two objectives: 1) to push every possible lever to get as many of you back to work as quickly as possible and 2) to tap every resource to get financial relief for our members who remain laid off. NYC Council Approves Hotel Worker Severance Bill 40 to 3

On Thursday, September 23rd, the New York City Council voted overwhelmingly to pass the Hotel Worker Severance Bill. The bill, designed to incentivize closed hotels to reopen, requires closed hotels with at least 100 guest rooms to either reopen and recall at least 25% of their staff by November 1st or pay $500 per week to laid off employees for up to 30 weeks. Ernie Peters, HTC Regional Director and Local 6 Vice President

The union was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Ernie Peters, a longtime HTC Regional Director and a Local 6 Business Agent and Vice President. Peters passed away on May 26. He was 85 years old and had been a member of our union for 68 years.

Throughout his long tenure at our union Peters was a strong representative of our members and a fierce enforcer of the contract. He was well respected by members and management alike.

Dominick Pugliese, Marriott Brooklyn Bridge

The Union is deeply saddened to announce the passing of our brother Dominick Pugliese, a housekeeping aide at the Marriott Brooklyn Bridge since 2001.

Known by all as an enthusiastic worker who cared deeply about the people around him, Dominick was adored by his co-workers, family and friends. He was also passionate about sports, especially the Yankees, Giants and Knicks. A devoted father to his three children, Dominick was immensely proud of his daughter Ashley in college.

City Council Speaker Quinn praises health center system

City Council Speaker Christine Quinn praised the Health Center system in her State of the City address last month, adding that the Freelancers Union, which represents self-employed workers, would build a similar system with the support of government funding.

Mario Gabelli Named Honorary Member

Hotel Voice, Spring 2020

 A special moment took place at the December meeting of the Local 6 Delegate Assembly, when for only the fourth time in its 81-year history the union bestowed an honorary membership. The recipient of the honorary membership was Mario Gabelli, whose generous support for the Hotel Trades Council's scholarship fund has allowed for more awards and larger grants. Mr. Gabelli's father, Joseph Gabelli, was a charter member of both Local 6 and the Hotel Trades Council.

College Scholarships Awarded to 22 High School Seniors

There haven't been many good news items in 2020, with the COVID-19 crisis leaving so many of our union's members out of work, but the annual scholarship awards for this year can give all of us hope for the future. A total of $264,000 has been awarded to 22 promising students who are children of our union's members. Congratulations to these scholars and to their parents!
