After a Grueling Anti-Union Campaign, Union Election Begins for Amazon Workers in Alabama

On Monday, February 8th, Amazon warehouse workers in Bessemer, Alabama began casting their ballots to join the Retail, Wholesale, and Department Store Union (RWDSU). If a majority of Bessemer workers vote for the union, the warehouse will become the first unionized Amazon facility in the country.

Amazon has relentlessly campaigned against the union. The company’s no holds barred union-busting tactics unfortunately come as no surprise to our Union. For over 80 years, hotel workers in New York City have had to endure similar intimidation, surveillance, and a barrage of lies from employers when organizing.

HTC negotiates first contract in New Jersey

Workers at the Sheraton Mahwah have unanimously ratified their first contract negotiated by the Hotel Trades Council. The ratification vote took place on Friday, April 22, and Saturday, April 23, and the excellent new collective bargaining agreement was approved by a vote of 67 in favor of the contract, and 0 opposed.

There is more good news from the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan (ARP) that was passed by Congress and signed by President Biden in March. Many workers who are receiving — or have already received — unemployment benefits in 2021 qualify for no-cost or low-cost private health insurance. This little known feature of the ARP will last through the end of the year. But eligible workers must apply by August 15. The program applies to anyone who received unemployment benefits anytime during 2021, even if they are working again. Read more...

Women sue non-union Standard Hotel for discrimination

Two female former cocktail servers have sued the non-union Standard Hotel for gender discrimination. The suit alleges that the two women, both of whom are about 5-foot-4, did not meet the Standard's new standard for cocktail waitresses, i.e., "women who appear to be willowy, svelte and statuesque runway models " The fired cocktail servers sued the hotel due to the gender specific nature of this new policy.

Tavern auction raises $3.5 million

The three-day auction of Tavern on the Green's artwork, chandeliers, and other wares raised $3.5 million for the restaurant, a start at paying off its many creditors.

John Lam’s new Sheraton Brooklyn opens its doors

As reported in the Wall Street Journal, hotel developer John Lam opened a new, full-service Sheraton hotel in downtown Brooklyn on May 20, 2010. The non-union Sheraton Brooklyn, one of the many new hotels currently planned for Brooklyn, threatens our union's density and our ability to negotiate strong contracts in the future.
