IRS Offers a Second 401 (k) Tax Shelter

As explained elsewhere in this edition of Hotel Voice, a 401 (k) plan is an advantage for workers because the money they contribute each week is deducted from their paychecks without being taxed. Another advantage is that the money that is invested in a 401 (k) plan account is allowed to grow free of taxation.
Division A Scholarship Application Deadline Is May 31

Union Wins Back Pay at Saratoga Casino & Raceway

The sky is suddenly bluer and brighter for the employees at the Saratoga Casino & Raceway—HTC blue that is! That’s because the Union has won back pay for a large group of employees at “the Racino” due to management’s improper allocation of special function gratuities.

The decline in union density in the U.S. over the last 40 years has clearly resulted in a corresponding national decline in both real wages and the middle class standard of living. This is an established fact, based on both government statistics and private studies, and it was recently confirmed by an independent analysis by the New York Times.

As seen in this edition of Hotel Voice, the hotel industry’s annual blood drive will be held on Tuesday, May 27th, between the hours of 12:00 noon. and 6:00 p.m. at the DoubleTree by Hilton Metropolitan Hotel, 569 Lexington Ave. (between 50th and 51st Streets) in the Metro III Room on the mezzanine level.

Peter Ward and the Hotel Trades Council’s administration were re-elected by acclamation this week at a general membership meeting held on April 23. The HTC administration will serve a three-year term in office.

More than 6,000 Members Participated in Eat Well, Be Well, Feel Well Event

The old record for highest attendance at Eat Well, Be Well, Feel Well (EWFWBW) was shattered the last week in March, when there were 6,317 visits handled by the Health and Dental Centers. The previous high attendance for the event was in 2009, when there were 5,176 visits. The amazing numbers from this year are a tribute to the strong effort by the Benefit Funds Office to increase health awareness.
