Some people were shocked this week when NYC Comptroller Scott Stringer issued a study that showed that the average woman in the five boroughs earns only 82 cents for every dollar her male counterparts earn. And New York has it better than the rest of the country.

In the last two years two additional states in the U.S. have adopted so-called “right-to-work” laws, and right now there is similar legislation on the table in Pennsylvania and Oregon. Since there are now 24 “right-to-work” states, the addition of those two states would put right-to-work states in the majority in our country.
Local 1422 Membership Meeting

A general membership meeting of Hotel Maintenance Painters Union Local 1422 will be held on Thursday, April 24th, the Union’s President, Declan Tracey, has announced. A number of very important items are on the agenda for this meeting, and President Tracey asks all Local 1422 members to make every effort to attend.
New York City Observes 103rd Anniversary of Triangle Fire

On March 25 the City of New York looked back at the tragic events that took place 103 years ago in a sweatshop known as the Triangle Shirtwaist factory. A crowd of 500 took part in the observance, which was held at the site of the tragedy.

$500,000 in Back Pay Distributed at the New Yorker

As Hotel Voice reported several weeks ago the Union reached agreement with the New Yorker Hotel that called for a group of 44 workers to receive a total of a half-million dollars in back pay. We are happy to report that the money was distributed recently, to the smiles and cheers of these members who are employed in building repairs/renovations and property operations.
Union Staff Members Run Half Marathon in Honor of Michael Simo, Rebecca Pomares

On a recent frigid Sunday morning, a number of Union staff members laced up their running shoes and ran in the Fred Lebow Central Park Half Marathon. The Union’s running team, called “HEAT Lightning,” was created last year by Local 6 Executive Vice President & HTC General Counsel Richard Maroko, who is himself an avid marathoner.

As the health industry moves toward engaging and encouraging patients to take control of their own health matters, the Employee Benefit Funds will be releasing a “patient portal” during the last week in March. A patient portal is a secure website that patients can use to view and interact with their medical information via the Internet.

The Union sent busloads of members to Albany on March 4 to rally and lobby for Universal Pre-K, an education component that New Yorkers sorely need. Members met at the Union at 6:00 a.m. and then boarded the buses for the trip up to the state capitol. Once in Albany, they attended a rally where they were joined by members of other unions as well as people from many community organizations, religious congregations and non-profit groups.
