Rivers Casino Workers Ratify Their First Contract
An excellent new first contract has been successfully negotiated by our union for the 800 employees of the Rivers Resort and Casino in Schenectady, New York. It was ratified by the workers with a resounding 98% majority on October 17th and 18th. The Story of the First Contract
The “Industry-Wide Agreement” (“IWA” for short), is the Hotel Trades Council’s master union contract with the Hotel Association of New York City, Inc. (which is the union of the hotel owners). Today, the IWA covers 28,000 members of the Hotel Trades Council in New York City – the vast majority of our union’s members, including employees of every type of hotel and motel, large and small, not only in the center of Manhattan but throughout New York City, including the outer boroughs.

New York City and Airbnb have settled a year-and-a-half-long legal dispute over the City’s right to require Airbnb to turn over data in order to more effectively enforce local law.
Over the last 10 years, thousands of union activists, community members, and affordable housing groups have advocated at City Hall and in Albany to pass common-sense laws that prohibit the operation of “illegal hotels” in our neighborhoods. Medgar Evers Opens Vaccine Appointments For Brooklyn Residents
New York City hotel workers are eligible to sign up for appointments at any New York State or NYC vaccination site. If you are a Brooklyn resident and want to try and get an appointment immediately, earlier today, the state run vaccination center at Medgar Evers College opened 5,000 vaccine appointments exclusively for Brooklyn residents. Union Secures Protections for Hotel, Casino, Club Workers in the Wake of Supreme Court’s Ruling on NY Gun Law
For over 100 years, New York State had strict gun safety laws that severely limited the number of individuals who are able to carry firearms outside of their homes. This changed on June 23rd, when the U.S. Supreme Court invalidated key parts of the State’s law, opening the door for virtually anyone to now carry a firearm outside of their home in New York and New Jersey.
Immediately following the Court’s decision, our Union began working with elected officials and representatives in the hotel and gaming industries to do everything possible to protect our members while at work. On July 1st, the Union both secured protections in New York State law and came to a new agreement with the Hotel Association of New York City addressing firearm safety. Read more...
HTC invites DNC to choose Brooklyn!
The Democratic National Committee “DNC” announced in November that they will host the 2016 Democratic National Convention in either Brooklyn, Philadelphia, or Columbus. Delegates to the 2016 Democratic National Convention will select the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee. HTC President Peter Ward urged the DNC to chose New York City for the 2016 Democratic National Convention. “New York City’s unionized hotel industry embodies the Party’s ideals of shared prosperity and a vibrant middle class,” Ward commented.
