Granville Nicholls, Harvard Club and Local 6 Trustee
The Union is saddened to announce the recent passing of Local 6 Trustee Granville Nicholls at his home in Chester, NY. He was 73. Granville, who immigrated to the US from Barbados, started working as a waiter at the Harvard Club in the summer of 1978. During his 40+ years there, he became a Union delegate, a shop steward, and eventually a Union trustee.

The Story Behind the GRIWA
When HTC’s jurisdiction was expanded in 2010, it inherited hotels with weak contracts, low wages and benefits, and workers who were not impressed by the union representation they were receiving. After several difficult contract fights to improve upon these poor conditions, HTC set out with a plan to imitate the success that HTC has achieved in New York City by organizing more hotels to expand union density and by establishing a new master contract for the region similar to the IWA in New York City.
Our union expands into New Jersey and Upstate
During the past six months, our union has assumed a major new role as the collective bargaining representative for more than 2,500 additional hotel and gaming workers in 32 shops in northern New Jersey and the Capital District of New York State.

Union “YES!” at the Ludlow Hotel – HTC Wins with 97% of the Vote
Despite a nasty anti-union campaign by management, the workers of the Ludlow Hotel, on Ludlow and East Houston Streets in Lower Manhattan, have voted by a rather unambiguous majority in favor of HTC and have now won the priceless right to negotiate. The vote was conducted by the National Labor Relations Board on August 20, 2015.
Rivers Casino Workers Ratify Their First Contract
An excellent new first contract has been successfully negotiated by our union for the 800 employees of the Rivers Resort and Casino in Schenectady, New York. It was ratified by the workers with a resounding 98% majority on October 17th and 18th. The casino/resort signed on to HTC’s Greater Regional Industry Wide Agreement (the "GRIWA"), which is our union’s recently established landmark master contract for upstate New York, Northern New Jersey and the suburbs of New York City.Knickerbocker Hotel Workers Vote To Unionize

Severance Pay: Union dues should not be deducted

Most hotels covered by the IWA, Division A and GRIWA contracts have started to pay severance to laid off workers in accordance with the arbitration award won in September. The Union made the decision and has instructed employers NOT to deduct dues from your severance pay. Read more...
