Hotels keep going up: what does this mean for HTC members?

Despite an unprecedented surge of hotel-building in the city from 2008 through 2010, an additional 40 hotels are already scheduled for completion by 2013. A significant number of these new hotels are (or will be) non-union and determined to remain that way. Every non-union hotel is a direct threat to the continuation of the rights, protections, and benefits generations of our members have fought for and won.

1,200 Del Lago Casino workers organize with HTC!

On February 15th, HTC was certified as the collective bargaining representative of 1,200 bargaining unit employees at the new del Lago Resort and Casino in the Finger Lakes Region. The del Lago is the second major casino in New York State to be organized by our union.

More hotels open in Brooklyn hotel hub

Two more hotels opened in the Gowanus neighborhood of Brooklyn this summer. The Union Hotel, a 43-room property on Degraw Street between Third and Fourth Avenues, was the first of the two to open. The Fairfield Inn New York Brooklyn opened a month later; it is a Marriott property.

Marriott has waged a very sophisticated and expensive avoidance strategy at its two non-union hotels in New York City: the New York Marriott Marquis, its flagship hotel in Times Square, and the Marriott Downtown, located on Albany and West Streets in lower Manhattan. The cornerstone of Marriott’s union avoidance strategy was doing a masterful job tricking the workers into believing that they had the same rights and job protections that HTC members have under our contract. Workers at Park Hyatt Win First Contract

On Monday, June 15, 2015, workers at the Park Hyatt celebrated winning their first Union contract. Over 130 members from the Park Hyatt met with Hotel Trades Council Executive Vice President and General Counsel Rich Maroko and union staff to review the provisions of their first contract, which secures them guaranteed wage increases, the opportunity to enroll in the industry’s free family healthcare, a pension, and job security for the next eleven years. An overwhelming 98% voted to ratify the agreement.
