New York passes nation’s strongest ban on evictions and foreclosures

On December 28th, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the COVID-19 Emergency Eviction and Foreclosure Prevention Act. The law effectively enacts a 60-day eviction and foreclosure moratorium for all New York tenants and homeowners until February 26, 2021. New Yorkers who are experiencing financial hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic and who submit a hardship declaration form are prevented from being evicted or having their home foreclosed on for even longer, until May 1, 2021.

As Hotel Voice reported several weeks ago the Union reached agreement with the New Yorker Hotel that called for a group of 44 workers to receive a total of a half-million dollars in back pay. New York State Homeowners: Apply for Assistance Starting January 3rd!

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has announced that beginning January 3rd, New York State will distribute up to $539 million to eligible homeowners who are struggling as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The State’s Homeowner Assistance Fund will provide up to $50,000 dollars of financial assistance to eligible homeowners, access to case managers to help homeowners find additional mortgage relief, and referrals to housing counseling and legal services. Read more...
