Union negotiating emergency safety protocols amid coronavirus outbreak

The Union is negotiating, company by company, a special emergency agreement with the hotel industry to address pressing concerns to our members caused by the Coronavirus Crisis. We are calling the agreement the “Coronavirus Hotel Safety Protocol,” and most of the major hotel operators have already signed on to it (see below for a current list). We are in urgent and energetic discussions with those companies who, as of yet, have not signed.

NYC City Council passes and Mayor de Blasio signs law protecting hotel workers and guests

Last Wednesday, by a vote of 45 to 4, the NYC City Council passed, and on Monday, Mayor Bill de Blasio signed, a new law which will provide vital security for New York City hotel workers, and which will also greatly enhance consumer protections for people traveling to our city.

HTC President Rich Maroko commented, “40,000 HTC members and their families applaud and thank the mayor, the speaker, and all our friends in the City Council for acting decisively to enact critical measures to prevent a small, unscrupulous segment of the hotel owners in this city from exploiting the COVID-19 disaster to profiteer. Division A Members Ratify Contract Extension

A large number of Hotel Trades Council Division A members voted overwhelmingly on October 15 to approve a contract extension similar to the extension of the IWA approved in June by their brother and sister HTC members employed in non-Division A hotels.

Floor Housekeepers at the Intercontinental Times Square ratify first union contract

On Friday, March 30th, the Floor Housekeepers at the Intercontinental Times Square voted unanimously to ratify their first union contract.

850 Workers Fired at Non-union Marriott Marquis in Times Square

On December 11th, the Marriott Marquis, the largest non-union hotel in New York City, terminated over 850 employees, most after many years of service with the hotel. Most of them will be replaced by subcontracted workers. Read more...

HTC Helped Get Out the Vote for Biden-Harris, Playing a Role in their Historic Victory

Dozens of HTC members and organizers volunteered to get out the vote for President-elect Joe Biden, Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, and Democratic candidates for the U.S. Senate in the 2020 election. Union volunteers phone banked and canvassed for the candidates in key swing states: Arizona, Florida, Nevada, and Pennsylvania. Their efforts helped to achieve a historic victory for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in the presidential election, and to win an important Senate seat in Arizona. 

Meet the 2013 Vito J. Pitta Scholarship Winners

A few weeks ago, Hotel Voice provided the names of the 2013 recipients of the Vito J. Pitta scholarships. A total of 35 graduating high school seniors received $280,000 in college grant money this year, and the program overall has now awarded a total of $7,080,000 to 885 students since its inception.
