Union Uses Political Influence to Propel Reopenings
Since March of 2020, when the COVID-19 crisis decimated our industry, our Union has aggressively and tirelessly worked and fought to accomplish two objectives: 1) to push every possible lever to get as many of you back to work as quickly as possible and 2) to tap every resource to get financial relief for our members who remain laid off. Members Celebrate the GRIWA Ratification
Not even monsoon-like rains could keep hundreds of members from packing a room at the Newark Hilton Penn Station on April 16 to celebrate the ratification of the new Greater Regional Industry Wide Contract, also known as the GRIWA.
It was a boisterous crowd and everyone was in a celebratory mood.
The meeting was opened by HTC General Counsel and Executive Vice President Richard Maroko, who explained in the simplest terms what the contract meant.

Peter Ward and the Hotel Trades Council’s administration were re-elected by acclamation this week at a general membership meeting held on April 23. The HTC administration will serve a three-year term in office.
NYC City Council passes and Mayor de Blasio signs law protecting hotel workers and guests

Last Wednesday, by a vote of 45 to 4, the NYC City Council passed, and on Monday, Mayor Bill de Blasio signed, a new law which will provide vital security for New York City hotel workers, and which will also greatly enhance consumer protections for people traveling to our city.
HTC President Rich Maroko commented, “40,000 HTC members and their families applaud and thank the mayor, the speaker, and all our friends in the City Council for acting decisively to enact critical measures to prevent a small, unscrupulous segment of the hotel owners in this city from exploiting the COVID-19 disaster to profiteer. We are fortunate to have elected officials in this city and state who have acted courageously and responsibly in these terrible times.” Read more...
