Here are the 2009 Writing Contest winners

Selecting the winners of our Union's annual writing contest is a difficult task, especially because there is no exact measuring device for creativity. This year's winners wrote about a wide range of topics. As in past contests, however, the diverse entries often had the collective element of social awareness.

Let’s Look at the Issues

The drubbing suffered recently by Democrats on a national level on Election Day has been blamed on a number of factors. This would include placing the blame on Barack Obama as if the election were a referendum on the President’s performance.

The Story Behind the GRIWA

When HTC’s jurisdiction was expanded in 2010, it inherited hotels with weak contracts, low wages and benefits, and workers who were not impressed by the union representation they were receiving. After several difficult contract fights to improve upon these poor conditions, HTC set out with a plan to imitate the success that HTC has achieved in New York City by organizing more hotels to expand union density and by establishing a new master contract for the region similar to the IWA in New York City.

Our choice for President

It shouldn't surprise anyone that our Union supports the re-election of Barack Obama. He was elected President in 2008 with massive support from unions.
