Let’s Look at the Issues
The drubbing suffered recently by Democrats on a national level on Election Day has been blamed on a number of factors. This would include placing the blame on Barack Obama as if the election were a referendum on the President’s performance. One commentator on Fox News said the beating experienced by the Democrats was due to a “do nothing” White House. And there were plenty of commentators who said the election results were due to the public’s disappointment in President Obama.
That leaves a few questions to ask.
When President Obama took office in January, 2009, the country and indeed the entire world was in a deep financial crisis that threatened a global depression. This was the mess left to him and the American people by eight years of the George W. Bush administration and its drastic tax cuts for the wealthy and its two unfunded and unnecessary wars, which added trillions of dollars to the national debt. Under the Obama administration’s steady guidance, our country was able to avoid the greatest depression since the Great Depression itself. Is this why the public is dissatisfied with President Obama?
Is the public angry at the Obama administration because of the country’s economic performance during his tenure? If so, the public needs some education. Under President Obama the U.S. has had 63 consecutive months of economic expansion. And while George W. Bush added trillions to the U.S. debt, the Obama administration has actually reduced the federal deficit by 66 percent. Should the public be angry about that?
Under President Obama our country has had the most diverse cabinet in its history, including the first African-American Attorney General, Eric Holder. President Obama appointed not one but two women to the U.S. Supreme Court, including its first Latina, Sonia Sotomayor. These certainly can’t be valid reasons the public is upset with the President.
The Obama administration ended the war in Iraq and is in the process of doing the same in Afghanistan. It was this administration, not the Bush administration, that killed the world’s most dangerous terrorist, Osama Bin Laden. Is this why the public is angry with Obama?
The U.S. auto industry, once the pride of the U.S. manufacturing sector, was ready to collapse until President Obama stepped in personally and saved GM and Chrysler. Those companies are flourishing again, providing hundreds of thousands of jobs with good benefits, and the U.S. treasury has been paid back the money that was spent to rescue them. Is this what angered voters against President Obama?
There’s more. The entire U.S. banking system was threatening collapse in 2009 and the Obama administration’s Treasury Department prevented that calamity from occurring. The administration didn’t just sit back and bask in praise for this accomplishment it passed Wall Street reform legislation and instituted great protections for consumers with the Dodd Frank Act. It was the Obama administration that set up the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Maybe that’s what made voters disappointed in President Obama?
Because of President Obama there are nine million Americans who now have health coverage for the first time. Children are now covered to age 26 under their parents’ health plans and no longer can people be turned down for health insurance because they have a pre-existing condition. Could voters be dissatisfied over that?
After six years of the Obama presidency, the stock market is at all time highs and we are seeing gas prices that are lower than any time during the administration of George W. Bush. When Obama took office the Bush administration had left the country with an unemployment rate was 10.2 percent. It’s now 5.8 percent. Is this what filled voters with discontent?
President Obama also signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which brought back basic protections against pay discrimination for women and other workers. He did this over the strenuous objections of Republicans, who had blocked the bill when Bush was President. Are workers angry about this restoration of their rights?
If indeed President Obama is responsible for the heavy losses suffered by Democrats this year it is only because the Democratic candidates failed repeatedly to speak about the many accomplishments of the President and his administration. And if voters were angry at President Obama on Election Day maybe they should take another look at his actual record instead of listening to the pap being spread by whining Republicans who showed from day one of his administration that they had no intentions of working with him.
The true story of this year’s election is that too many Democrats didn’t bother to vote. President Obama has done a good job in office, but because that message was lost in this year’s campaign the U.S. Congress is now in the hands of the Republicans, the same party that almost led the U.S. to ruin only six years ago, when President Obama and his administration rode to the rescue.

Los niños están ahora cubiertos hasta los 26 años en virtud de los planes de salud de sus padres y ya nadie puede ser rechazado por un seguro de salud por tener una condición pre-existente.
¿Podrían estar los votantes insatisfechos sobre esto?
Después de seis años de la presidencia de Obama, el mercado de valores se encuentra en los máximos históricos y estamos viendo los precios del gas que son más bajos que en cualquier momento durante la administración de George W. Bush. Cuando Obama asumió el cargo el gobierno de Bush había dejado al país con una tasa de desempleo del 10,2 por ciento. Y, si los votantes estaban enojados con el presidente Obama el día de las elecciones quizás deberían echar otro vistazo a su accionar real, en vez de escuchar las sandeces que desparramaron los republicanos, quienes mostraron desde el primer día de su gobierno que no tenían intenciones de trabajar con él.
La verdadera historia de las elecciones de este año es que también muchos demócratas se quedaron en casa ese día. El presidente Obama ha hecho un buen trabajo pero, dado que ese mensaje se perdió en la campaña de este año, el Congreso está ahora en las manos del mismo partido que casi llevó a los Estados Unidos a la ruina hace sólo seis años cuando el presidente Obama y su administración salieron al rescate.
