Many Americans understand that a vote for the President is, in effect, a vote on the future of the U.S. Supreme Court, whose rulings will affect our civil liberties and rights for years to come. But Supreme Court Justices are not the only presidential appointees that have significant power over the lives of the American people. A group of lesser known presidential appointees that are effectively “on the ballot” each election are those to the National Labor Relations Board (“NLRB”). These appointees are responsible for protecting the rights of American workers to organize, join a union, and collectively bargain over their wages, benefits, and working conditions.

As working people cast their ballots this election, they will be voting on the very survival of the American labor movement.

College Scholarships Awarded to 22 High School Seniors

There haven't been many good news items in 2020, with the COVID-19 crisis leaving so many of our union's members out of work, but the annual scholarship awards for this year can give all of us hope for the future. A total of $264,000 has been awarded to 22 promising students who are children of our union's members. Congratulations to these scholars and to their parents!

$300 Supplemental unemployment benefits: what we know

After the Republican-controlled Senate took a summer recess without approving any supplemental unemployment benefits for nearly 30 million Americans who are out of work, President Trump signed an executive order to partially fund additional unemployment benefits through the new “Lost Wages Assistance Program” overseen by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (“FEMA”).

The executive order, which potentially provides up to $400 a week in supplemental unemployment benefits, has caused broad confusion and raised many legal and operational questions. As a result, unemployed workers in New York and New Jersey have yet to receive any supplemental benefits. Read more...

Members Volunteering to Help Elect Christine Quinn Mayor of New York

The Union’s endorsement of Christine Quinn for mayor of New York last week drew significant media coverage and generated considerable enthusiasm among our members. Following the endorsement, member volunteers immediately hit the streets to help the effort to elect Ms. Quinn mayor. That effort has continued this week.

Boathouse management’s faulty arithmetic and logic

97 out of 140 permanent Boathouse employees (69%) have voted for the union, with their feet, by picketing the restaurant. That includes 37 permanent workers who were illegally (i.e., temporarily) fired, whom the National Labor Relations Board intends to reinstate, and 60 more permanent employees who walked off the job in solidarity with their fired co-workers.
