An article in the Buffalo News probed the potential ramifications of Carl Paladino's proposal to make New York's public assistance recipients, as well as its long-term unemployed, work for their benefits, which the former are already required to do by the federal welfare reform law of 1996, a significant piece of legislation Paladino seems to be unaware of. The primary difference between his proposal and what is already in effect is that Paladino would like to force the long-term unemployed to work for their benefits, like welfare recipients do.

I have been informed by the Administrator of the Industry-Wide Health Benefit Fund that our Union Health Centers in New York City are expected to have the ability to do testing for the coronavirus by the end of this week.

NYC offers free COVID-19 testing and antibody tests

On June 29, NYC Health + Hospitals began to offer free antibody tests at locations across the five boroughs. The City is also offering free COVID-19 testing to all New York City Residents, whether or not they have had symptoms of the virus. Both tests are available regardless of immigration status or insurance coverage. To read more, click here.

An Agence France-Presse story in The Vancouver Sun discussed the growing number of "Pod" hotels, such as Manhattan's The Jane and The Pod Hotel. Inspired by the Japanese "capsule" hotels, they have been gaining popularity in New York City since The Pod opened in 2007.

The New York City hotel industry has been hit extremely hard by the coronavirus crisis. At a time when hotels would normally be at 90% occupancy, New York City hotels are reporting just over 40%. Despite the lack of revenue and uncertain timeline for re-opening tourism in the City, on May 12, 2020, Union leadership won an extension to the Division A Contract for over 120 employees at the Americana Inn, Avalon, Shoreham, and the Life Hotel.

In what was perhaps the closest championship match in Hotel Employee Soccer League history, Raaafat Rohaeim scored the game winner as Mandarin Oriental outdueled Hilton New York in penalty kicks 4-3, to win the 2009 Soccer Championship, 3-2.
