The Story of the First Contract

The “Industry-Wide Agreement” (“IWA” for short), is the Hotel Trades Council’s master union contract with the Hotel Association of New York City, Inc. (which is the union of the hotel owners). Today, the IWA covers 28,000 members of the Hotel Trades Council in New York City – the vast majority of our union’s members, including employees of every type of hotel and motel, large and small, not only in the center of Manhattan but throughout New York City, including the outer boroughs.

Republican outrage over NLRB efforts to enforce labor law against Boeing

In a move that has provoked the fury of America's right-wing politicians, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) issued a complaint on April 20 against the Boeing Company for transferring aircraft assembly work out of state in retaliation against its unionized workers. That case took a step forward on June 14 as both sides appeared before a Seattle administrative law judge (ALJ) for an evidentiary hearing.

For our Union, and our members, we find ourselves in the midst of what are undoubtedly the darkest days in the 82-year history of our Union. Our industry is almost entirely closed down, something that has never happened before — not during the Great Depression of the 1930s, not during the world wars, and not after the terrorist attacks of 9/11. HTC was first – now the panic button idea is catching on

One of the occupational hazards that hotel workers in certain job classifications (especially in housekeeping and room service) face is the reality that their duties require them to enter isolated locked guest rooms by themselves, and that some hotel guests inside may have malevolent intentions.

Richard Trumka was elected the next president of the largest labor federation in the United States, the AFL-CIO, on September 16, 2009.

Five days of negotiations in Puerto Rico: Slow pace, some progress

Union negotiations with Hilton, began on September 9th and lasted for 5 days. Held in the Colegio de Abogados, on Ave Ponce de Leon, the negotiations were heavily attended by employees from the three Hilton hotels.
