HTC negotiates first contract in New Jersey

Workers at the Sheraton Mahwah have unanimously ratified their first contract negotiated by the Hotel Trades Council. The ratification vote took place on Friday, April 22, and Saturday, April 23, and the excellent new collective bargaining agreement was approved by a vote of 67 in favor of the contract, and 0 opposed.

U.S. working class hit hardest by falling wages, unemployment

Recent articles in the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times discuss the falling wages and increasing unemployment that continue to plague the American workforce even as some sections of the economy and other nations' economies recover from the recent recession. àWorkers are still suffering from the economic implosion despite the fact that corporate profits "have more than recovered, rising 12% since late 2007." The main cause of this "jobless recovery" is the basic structure of the American economy ââ¬â one where employers function with few restraints. à

These problems affect millions of working people, and have for many years. Our Union won’t resolve them overnight or on our own. NYC City Council passes and Mayor de Blasio signs law protecting hotel workers and guests

Last Wednesday, by a vote of 45 to 4, the NYC City Council passed, and on Monday, Mayor Bill de Blasio signed, a new law which will provide vital security for New York City hotel workers, and which will also greatly enhance consumer protections for people traveling to our city.

HTC President Rich Maroko commented, “40,000 HTC members and their families applaud and thank the mayor, the speaker, and all our friends in the City Council for acting decisively to enact critical measures to prevent a small, unscrupulous segment of the hotel owners in this city from exploiting the COVID-19 disaster to profiteer. We are fortunate to have elected officials in this city and state who have acted courageously and responsibly in these terrible times.” Read more...

The Story of the First Contract

The “Industry-Wide Agreement” (“IWA” for short), is the Hotel Trades Council’s master union contract with the Hotel Association of New York City, Inc. (which is the union of the hotel owners). Today, the IWA covers 28,000 members of the Hotel Trades Council in New York City – the vast majority of our union’s members, including employees of every type of hotel and motel, large and small, not only in the center of Manhattan but throughout New York City, including the outer boroughs.
