Don’t Forget! Flu Shots
Available at the Health Centers!

We would once again like to remind members that flu shots are available to all members and their families at the Union’s Health Centers. Should you get a flu shot? Yes! Anyone who wishes to reduce his or her risk of getting the flu this year should be vaccinated. The truth is that there is no better way to avoid getting the flu than to get the annual vaccine. That’s because flu shots really can be effective in preventing the flu and the vaccines being administered by the Health Centers are the best ones available; they will prevent most strains of the illness, including the bird flu.

Author Andrew Solomon calls the book "compulsively readable," and Hotel Voice wholeheartedly agrees!

The book is entitled, The Plaza: The Secret Life of America's Most Famous Hotel. Written by New York Times contributor Julie Satow, it provides not only a fascinating history of the Plaza Hotel but also a chapter on our union's unforgettable effort in 2005 to stop the property from converting totally to condominiums.

Members Celebrate the GRIWA Ratification

Not even monsoon-like rains could keep hundreds of members from packing a room at the Newark Hilton Penn Station on April 16 to celebrate the ratification of the new Greater Regional Industry Wide Contract, also known as the GRIWA.

It was a boisterous crowd and everyone was in a celebratory mood.

The meeting was opened by HTC  General Counsel and Executive Vice President Richard Maroko, who explained in the simplest terms what the contract meant.

Winning Better Contracts

When HTC President Rich Maroko announced our Union’s strategic plan last year, we were just months away from the expiration of the GRIWA and Upstate Casino contracts. Those negotiations were tough – but in the end, we left the bargaining table with landmark contracts that dramatically increased wages, protected benefits, and established brand new funds and rights that will pave the way for our Union’s future. Here Are the 2019 Writing Contest Winners

In an exercise that showed the enormous talent in our union family, high school students from grades 10 through 12 submitted scores of entries into the 2019 writing competition. We’re glad they did.

More than half the essays and almost half of the narratives written by the students had immigration as their subject, and many of those explained how the union benefited their families. The Second Amendment, modern day heroes and the politicizing of the U.S. Supreme Court were also popular essay topics, and there were quite a large number of poignant essays and narratives about self-discovery.
