According to an article in the Wall Street Journal, a 300-room hotel will be going up on West 37th Street in midtown Manhattan. The site to be developed, a parking lot, is between 8th and 9th Avenues. The article described the current New York City hotel market as being "particularly alluring for developers" since tourism, business travel, and hotel room rates have all been on the rise.

Despite the lack of revenue and uncertain timeline for re-opening tourism in the City, on May 12, 2020, Union leadership won an extension to the Division A Contract for over 120 employees at the Americana Inn, Avalon, Shoreham, and the Life Hotel.

Marriott Marquis Workers Win Union Recognition After 35 Years

Last week, our Union finally succeeded in organizing the largest and oldest non-union hotel in New York City, the New York Marriott Marquis in Times Square. HTC won recognition as the collective bargaining representative of the workers in the hotel’s housekeeping department. NYC City Council passes and Mayor de Blasio signs law protecting hotel workers and guests

Last Wednesday, by a vote of 45 to 4, the NYC City Council passed, and on Monday, Mayor Bill de Blasio signed, a new law which will provide vital security for New York City hotel workers, and which will also greatly enhance consumer protections for people traveling to our city.

HTC President Rich Maroko commented, “40,000 HTC members and their families applaud and thank the mayor, the speaker, and all our friends in the City Council for acting decisively to enact critical measures to prevent a small, unscrupulous segment of the hotel owners in this city from exploiting the COVID-19 disaster to profiteer. HTC Member Denise Matthews, Grand Hyatt, Talks to NY1 About New NYC Law Incentivizing Hotels to Reopen

HTC Member Denise Matthews is one of over 1,000 members who was recalled to work at her union job as a result of new legislation requiring New York City hotels with 100 or more rooms to reopen by November 1st or pay severance to laid off workers. Just two weeks after the bill was first signed, a third of the closed, union hotels covered by the legislation have announced reopening dates. Read more...

Velma Petty, New York Hilton

The Union is saddened to announce the passing of our sister Velma Petty, a room attendant at the New York Hilton for 22 years.

A vivacious and bubbly woman, Velma was known for living life to the fullest. She loved going out to restaurants and exploring what New York City had to offer. No matter where she went she was the life of the party.

850 Workers Fired at Non-union Marriott Marquis in Times Square

On December 11th, the Marriott Marquis, the largest non-union hotel in New York City, terminated over 850 employees, most after many years of service with the hotel. Most of them will be replaced by subcontracted workers. Read more...
