Scab Rebecca Friedrichs Featured Speaker at Republican Convention

In the first ten minutes on the first night of its 2020 National Convention, the Republican Party featured a notorious anti-union former teacher, Rebecca Friedrichs, to deliver a vitriolic attack against labor unions. Friedrichs was the plaintiff in the 2016 Supreme Court case Friedrichs v. California Teachers Association, which aimed to defund and weaken public sector labor unions across the country.

At on time or another, as union members, many of us have run into a treacherous co-worker who is eager to lick the boots of their boss. There’s a term for such a character – scab. That’s Ms. Friedrichs in a nutshell.

The Republican Party’s choice of Ms. Friedrichs as the second speaker in its convention is a disturbing signal that the GOP is now even more hostile to the rights of workers than it has ever been. Read more...

What the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire means for workers today.

In states nationwide, working people are protesting the actions to strip them of collective bargaining. The Triangle fire and the Upper Big Branch explosion a century later make clear to me that workers want and need that voice. Collective bargaining still means a seat at the table to discuss issues such as working conditions, workplace safety and workplace innovation, empowering individuals to do the best job they can. And it means dignity and a chance for Americans to earn a better life.

Rainbow Room Once Again A Union House

On July 16th workers at the world famous Rainbow Room restaurant cast their vote for the union, with 94% voting to be represented by the Hotel Trades Council. Workers have taken an important step to winning the job security, guaranteed good benefits, workplace rights, and secured wage increases which come with an HTC union contract.

Urge New York to Extend Unemployment

In New York, where the State has neither agreed nor outright rejected the possibility of extending benefits, our Union has raised this issue with the Governor and the State Legislature. While they’ve promised to look into it, as of right now, these benefits are ending. As part of our efforts, we need to show elected officials how the upcoming loss of benefits will impact thousands of hardworking New Yorkers.
