Union Staff Members Run Half Marathon in Honor of Michael Simo, Rebecca Pomares

On a recent frigid Sunday morning, a number of Union staff members laced up their running shoes and ran in the Fred Lebow Central Park Half Marathon. The Union’s running team, called “HEAT Lightning,” was created last year by Local 6 Executive Vice President & HTC General Counsel Richard Maroko, who is himself an avid marathoner.

$500,000 in Back Pay Distributed at the New Yorker

As Hotel Voice reported several weeks ago the Union reached agreement with the New Yorker Hotel that called for a group of 44 workers to receive a total of a half-million dollars in back pay. We are happy to report that the money was distributed recently, to the smiles and cheers of these members who are employed in building repairs/renovations and property operations.

HTC supports 32BJ at rally for fair contract

On April 2nd, nearly 600 HTC members marched up Park Avenue with several other unions to show solidarity with 32BJ and their demand for a fair contract. The property service union’s contract expires on April 20th. With 32BJ's 70,000 NYC members facing increasing costs of living, the new contract would ensure that these union members will continue to provide for their families.

New York City Observes 103rd Anniversary of Triangle Fire

On March 25 the City of New York looked back at the tragic events that took place 103 years ago in a sweatshop known as the Triangle Shirtwaist factory. A crowd of 500 took part in the observance, which was held at the site of the tragedy.

Local 1422 Membership Meeting

A general membership meeting of Hotel Maintenance Painters Union Local 1422 will be held on Thursday, April 24th, the Union’s President, Declan Tracey, has announced. In the last two years two additional states in the U.S. have adopted so-called “right-to-work” laws, and right now there is similar legislation on the table in Pennsylvania and Oregon. Since there are now 24 “right-to-work” states, the addition of those two states would put right-to-work states in the majority in our country.

On October 22, 2013 Kellogg's locked out their union employees for rejecting the company's efforts to impose a plan under which all new workers would be employed as casual and part time with no assurance of work, significantly lower pay and a dramatic cut in benefits. Kellogg's calls this 'The New Workforce of the Future'.
