The 145,000-member union 1199 SEIU has conceded to a wage freeze for next year in an effort to rebuild the depleted pension fund. Workers will not be receiving their contractual 3 percent raise at the end of this year. In lieu of a raise, more money will be directed to worker pension and health care funds, which have dropped nearly $3.5 billion in the last few years. While it seems like unions all over the country are being forced into giving concessions, our union had the foresight and power to win a six-year contract that will weather this recession and remain strong regardless of the country's economic situation.
