The latest U.S. Census report has confirmed that the rich in the U.S. are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. Making matters worse, the report also reveals that it isn’t just the poor who are getting poorer, the middle class is getting poorer, too. The number of people in the middle class is declining and the amount of money earned by members of the middle class is waning as well.

Doorpersons and bellpersons overwhelmingly ratify porterage agreement

An agreement between the Union and the Hotel Association will result in higher earnings for hundreds of members of door and bell staffs at non-residential hotels that do group trade. The agreement was ratified overwhelmingly in a secret ballot vote held on Thursday, September 12. A total of 285 members — or 98 percent of those who cast ballots — voted in favor of the agreement.

Local 6 Member to Star in NJ Opera

Local 6 member Edgar Jaramillo will be appearing in a leading role in Cavalleria Rustica, an 1890 one-act opera masterpiece composed by Pietro Mascagni. Jaramillo, a tenor who works at Brittany Hall when he is not singing, will have the role of Turiddu.

Writing Contest Awards

Awards from the 2013 writing contest were distributed last month in a ceremony attended by Peter Ward and the competition’s sponsor, Donald Rubin of the Shirley and Donald Rubin Foundation. All but one of the winners attended, as did proud parents and other family members. 2013 Hotel Workers Walkathon Raises Cash for Children’s Aid Society

Hundreds of New York City hotel industry employees made lives better for children by participating in the 22nd annual Hotel Workers Walkathon earlier this month. The money raised by the event will benefit a the renowned non-profit organization, the Children’s Aid Society.
