Sam Chang’s new Comfort Inn opens in Staten Island

A 93-room Comfort Inn, developed by "budget hotel king" Sam Chang, opened for business on April 29. Located in Travis, near the Fresh Kills landfill, it is the first of three new budget hotels opening this year in Staten Island.

The Division A scholarships were awarded to Yifan Pu and others this week at a ceremony attended by students, their family members and union officers.

2010 a banner year for new hotels in NYC

According to the Wall Street Journal, a total of 44 new hotels will open this year in the city, the largest number in several decades, with almost 80% in Manhattan alone. New hotel development is just one indication that the city's hotel industry is clearly on the road to economic recovery.

Kamal Ahmed, Millenium One UN Plaza

We are saddened by the passing of Kamal Ahmed, a banquet server at the Millenium Hilton One UN Plaza and a Union member for almost 40 years.

Kamal came to the United States from Bangladesh 40 years ago. He is remembered as a loving husband, father and a community leader. At the time of his passing, Kamal was serving his second term as president of the New York City Bangladeshi society.

John Mensah, St. Regis

We are saddened by the passing of John Mensah, an Engineer at the St. Regis Hotel. John is remembered as a great husband, father, and grandfather.

John immigrated to New York City from Ghana and worked at the St. Regis since the hotel re-opened in 1991. His coworkers remember him as a helpful and skilled worker, and a proud union member.

Hotel Industry, Union Remember Anne Power

The New York City hotel industry was shaken recently when Anne Power passed away. She was a veteran of the human resources departments at several hotels in our city, beginning at the St. Regis, and serving as the director at the Palace and the Westin Times Square, and she was highly respected by everyone. She was only 54 years of age when she passed away, adding to the great sadness her loss caused us.
