Uniting to protest

Members of the gastronomic union Local 610 staged a protest Saturday in front of the El San Juan Hotel and Casino in Isla Verde, marking the third straight day of manifestations against their employer, the Blackstone Group, which owns the property and several others on the island. The workers are claiming better wages, working conditions and a new collective bargaining agreement.

San Juan's Ashford Avenue was closed off by police on Thursday, as hundreds of hotel workers chanted and marched in the street to protest Hilton's low wages, poor healthcare benefits, abusive managers, unsafe working conditions and violations of federal labor law.

Carlos Lopez, Warwick Hotel and Local 6 Vice President

Carlos Lopez, a fixture at the offices of HTC and Local 6 for more than 30 years, passed away on April 24. He leaves behind his son, Carlos Lopez Jr., his daughter-in-law, Diana, and grandchildren Matteo and Natalia. Lopez was 84 at the time of his death.

The news was greeted with great sadness by veteran members of our Union, but many of them also had very fond recollections of Lopez.

Urge New York to Extend Unemployment

In New York, where the State has neither agreed nor outright rejected the possibility of extending benefits, our Union has raised this issue with the Governor and the State Legislature. While they’ve promised to look into it, as of right now, these benefits are ending.
