A Look Back at 2019 and a Look Ahead to 2020
Hotel Voice, February 19, 2020 - As we look ahead to 2020 let’s also take a last look back at some of the significant events in our union during 2019. It’s a good reminder of what can be accomplished through our solidarity and determination. We began the year by announcing what is unquestionably the largest pension increase in the 81-year history of our union. This was particularly impressive when one realizes that at the time this increase was announced the HTC pension was already the largest pension anywhere in the hotel industry.

Enforcing our contracts is already one of our Union’s strengths - with thousands of grievances resolved each year. But we’re striving to do even better.
Our Union is launching six initiatives designed to help us find more contract violations and resolve them more quickly. From providing delegate trainings to hiring more enforcement staff to developing brand-new, custom technology, we looked for ways to modernize our enforcement operation at every step in the grievance process. Here Are the 2019 Writing Contest Winners
In an exercise that showed the enormous talent in our union family, high school students from grades 10 through 12 submitted scores of entries into the 2019 writing competition. We’re glad they did.
More than half the essays and almost half of the narratives written by the students had immigration as their subject, and many of those explained how the union benefited their families. The Second Amendment, modern day heroes and the politicizing of the U.S. Supreme Court were also popular essay topics, and there were quite a large number of poignant essays and narratives about self-discovery.
Prizes Awarded in 2020 Writing Competition
The Coronavirus pandemic has staggered our industry and our country, but has not in any way diminished the talent and creativity of the children of our Union's members. This much was obvious from the essays and narratives submitted to the Union's annual writing competition. This Year's Union Scholarship Awards
They want to be researchers, social workers, lawyers, teachers and doctors. They will be going to schools like CUNY's legendary Macaulay Honors College, Stony Brook, Harvard, Tulane, St. John's, and Stanford. They have been active in their communities and they have performed good works like volunteering at nursing homes and delivering Meals on Wheels. They are the Union's 2021 scholarship winners, and they are an impressive group of promising students representing hope for the future for all of us. Read more...
