Union Victory in Puerto Rico
When members of Unite Here Local 610 in Puerto Rico entered into a contract fight with Hilton in June 2009, the life of their union was hanging by a thread.
The new contract that was ratified in February 2010 saved their union. It stopped decades of decline and concession bargaining. It significantly raised the members’ standard of living and greatly increased their power.
Stronger Contract Enforcement
Enforcing our contracts is already one of our Union’s strengths - with thousands of grievances resolved each year. But we’re striving to do even better.
Our Union is launching six initiatives designed to help us find more contract violations and resolve them more quickly. From providing delegate trainings to hiring more enforcement staff to developing brand-new, custom technology, we looked for ways to modernize our enforcement operation at every step in the grievance process. Union wins three more months of healthcare and structured severance pay for workers from IWA and Division A shops in landmark arbitration

The arbitrator’s decision requires IWA and Division A employers to pay for an additional three-month extension of healthcare coverage for employees who are still on layoff as a result of the pandemic. Those workers are now guaranteed healthcare through the end of 2020. Most employees from those same IWA and Division A shops (who would be entitled to severance pay in the event the shop permanently closed) will soon be entitled to extra pay each week to supplement their unemployment benefits as a structured payout of severance. On the Ballot: The Survival of the American Labor Movement

Many Americans understand that a vote for the President is, in effect, a vote on the future of the U.S. Supreme Court, whose rulings will affect our civil liberties and rights for years to come. But Supreme Court Justices are not the only presidential appointees that have significant power over the lives of the American people. A group of lesser known presidential appointees that are effectively “on the ballot” each election are those to the National Labor Relations Board (“NLRB”). These appointees are responsible for protecting the rights of American workers to organize, join a union, and collectively bargain over their wages, benefits, and working conditions.
As working people cast their ballots this election, they will be voting on the very survival of the American labor movement.
2024 College Scholarship Winners
The Union’s scholarship program is one of the hard-won rights that members fought for during the 1985 city-wide strike. In the decades since, the program has awarded over $10 million to cover the education expenses of more than 1,200 children of HTC and Local 6 members. Read more...
The Story of the First Contract
The “Industry-Wide Agreement” (“IWA” for short), is the Hotel Trades Council’s master union contract with the Hotel Association of New York City, Inc. (which is the union of the hotel owners). Today, the IWA covers 28,000 members of the Hotel Trades Council in New York City – the vast majority of our union’s members, including employees of every type of hotel and motel, large and small, not only in the center of Manhattan but throughout New York City, including the outer boroughs.
