Resorts World Catskills Workers Vote Overwhelmingly to Ratify Their New Contract!
April 15, 2020 6:00PM
On Monday, March 30th, the workers at Resorts World Catskills ratified their second HTC contract through an online secret ballot vote. An overwhelming majority of 98% voted in favor or the agreement.
Negotiated before the Coronavirus outbreak, Resorts World Catskills signed onto the Greater Industry Wide Agreement (GRIWA), our union’s landmark master contract for upstate New York, Northern New Jersey and the suburbs of New York City. The GRIWA provides much needed security to the workers at Resorts World Catskills during this extremely difficult time in our country, securing rights, wages and benefits until March 31, 2023.
Anti-Asian hate crimes surge amid COVID-19 pandemic
May 22, 2020 10:05 AM
The international medical community has established guidelines to specifically avoid labelling illnesses after locations because doing so has proven to promote another plague – violent hate around the globe. In keeping with that intelligent policy, in February, the World Health Organization (WHO) named the strain of coronavirus which is causing this pandemic “COVID-19.”
However, despite that fact, right-wing politicians and media figures are inciting their followers to blame this disaster on anti-Chinese conspiracy theories by frequently referring to COVID-19 as “the Chinese virus,” or the “Wuhan virus.”
The shamelessly race-baiting rhetoric and ignorance has been responsible for an exponential rise in anti-Asian hate crimes in the last 3 months, including cyber-bullying, verbal abuse, and physical assaults such as being spit on, coughed on, and much worse.
Stronger Contract Enforcement
Enforcing our contracts is already one of our Union’s strengths - with thousands of grievances resolved each year. But we’re striving to do even better.
Our Union is launching six initiatives designed to help us find more contract violations and resolve them more quickly. Boathouse employees are signing up to join our union
The courageous, hard-working employees at the Boathouse restaurant want to be members of our Union. A large majority of the employees have signed union authorization cards and a petition has been filed with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) for a vote by the workers to join the Hotel Trades Council. An election and subsequent certification of the Union could occur in the near future.
HTC and the Little Rock Nine
“This year marks the 60th anniversary of our union honoring the Little Rock Nine — a group of incredibly brave students who were the center of the battle to desegregate Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, and who even today serve as an enduring symbol of the courage and resolve of the civil rights movement and the fight for equality.”
Those were the words of Hotel Trades Council President Peter Ward, on Tuesday, June 12, when the ties between our union and the Little Rock Nine officially spanned 60 years at a luncheon held in Gallagher’s Steak House.

Deadline Nears for Union Plus Scholarship Applications
Even though the New Year has just arrived, it’s not too early for parents and college-bound students to enter the hunt for scholarships, grants and low-interest student loans. In fact, it is almost necessary today, as the cost of college in the last year rose above the rate of inflation for the 21st consecutive year! College is indeed a gateway to success, but it is often an expensive one.

Media coverage of national labor battle
Bills aimed at weakening and ultimately eradicating labor unions continue to be pushed aggressively in state legislatures across the country. Ominously, this is true even in states where, for generations, unions have been strongest where it became possible for working families to constitute America's great middle class.
Prizes Awarded in 2020 Writing Competition
The Coronavirus pandemic has staggered our industry and our country, but has not in any way diminished the talent and creativity of the children of our Union's members. This much was obvious from the essays and narratives submitted to the Union's annual writing competition. There were many excellent entries, and nine of them resulted in the students winning cash prizes. Read more...
