Written by New York Times contributor Julie Satow, it provides not only a fascinating history of the Plaza Hotel but also a chapter on our union's unforgettable effort in 2005 to stop the property from converting totally to condominiums.
Hundreds of Members Attend Union’s Political Information Sessions
Many members have been volunteering their time helping our Union with various activities to keep us strong. These activities have included canvassing, leafleting during political campaigns, phone banking and other tasks, and all of them are important to our Union as a whole.
Members Vote Overwhelmingly for Dues Increase
On Thursday, July 24 HTC members voted, by an overwhelming majority to approve an increase in union dues. More than 6,500 members voted at seven different locations to approve this dues increase. In the final count, 89.9 percent of those who voted approved the dues increase—a remarkable demonstration of the memberships’ commitment to keep the union strong and to organize the non-union hotel industry.
Next Year’s Social Security Increase Is Lowest Ever
Under the Social Security program beneficiaries receive an annual cost of living adjustment (COLA) that is supposed to keep pace with price increases. Next year’s increase will be 1.5% (or about $19 a month), and it is the lowest COLA in history. This prompted Edward F. Coyle, the executive director of the Alliance for Retired Americans, to say, “I hope this news about next year’s Social Security COLA will cause politicians in Washington to reconsider their support for reducing this annual adjustment.
Clarion Empire Meadowlands Workers Ratify Their First HTC Contract!
Jubilant workers at the Clarion Empire Meadowlands Hotel in Secaucus, New Jersey unanimously ratified their first Hotel Trades Council contract on Thursday, November 21st. It is by far the best contract ever won for the workers at the Clarion, who were previously represented by the now defunct Local 96.
