Israel Gonzalez, Westin Times Square

Our Union is sad to announce the passing of Israel Gonzalez, who was a Potwasher at the Westin Times Square for over ten years. He was an active Union member and loved by family, friends and coworkers.

Israel’s wife Kara Lynn, whom he shared 35 years with, described him as hardworking and a “tinkerer” who had many hobbies. Israel liked to build computers, sing out loud, and play the congas. Kara Lynn mentioned that they were both homebodies and loved to watch movies and play video games together.

Campaign to Raise the Minimum Wage Continues

As we reported briefly in last week’s edition, hundreds of members of our Union turned out at a May 7 rally to raise the minimum wage. The featured speaker at the Union Square rally was Governor Andrew Cuomo, and he did not mince words in saying that New York’s working poor deserve a raise. Cuomo’s remarks were not political rhetoric. He backed them up with executive action.

On Thursday, May 7th nearly 500 HTC members joined SEIU 32BJ and SEIU 1199 members in Union Square Park to hear Governor Cuomo announce his progressive plan to form a wage board to investigate and implement a higher minimum wage for fast food workers.

Marriott Marquis Workers Win Union Recognition After 35 Years

Last week, our Union finally succeeded in organizing the largest and oldest non-union hotel in New York City, the New York Marriott Marquis in Times Square. HTC won recognition as the collective bargaining representative of the workers in the hotel’s housekeeping department. Hyatt Times Square newly unionized

On June June 5, 2014 the workers at the Hyatt Times Square officially became members of the Hotel Trades Council. Room Attendant Lorena Garcia commented “I can’t tell you how thrilled I am about this. This is a great new hotel, and now that we all have the union, I know I will have stability at this job in the future.”
