Hotel strike likely in Puerto Rico
The latest round of contract negotiations between Hilton and Local 610, which lasted three days, started off well, but ended badly. The first two sessions, held November 11 and 12, were productive. They began by revisiting the union's economic proposal, which had been put on hold temporarily while the union waited for quotes from insurance companies for an improved health plan for employees of the Condado Plaza and El San Juan Hotel and Casino.

Members at Desmond Hotel ratify contract; boycott ends
The Hotel Trades Council reached agreement on a new contract last week with management at the Desmond Hotel and Conference Center in Albany. The employees of the hotel voted to approve the agreement over the next two days, ratifying it unanimously by a vote of 78-0.
Vito J. Pitta Scholarships awarded to 35 students
In what is always considered to be one of the happiest days of the year, a total of $280,000 in college scholarships was awarded on June 14th to 35 high school seniors. The students are children of eligible members of our Union, and they represent a promising future for all of us.

Construction Begins on State-Of-The-Art Brooklyn Health Center!
In a historic day for our Union and its members and their families, ground was broken on March 19 for the new Brooklyn Health Center. When it opens less than two years from now, it will be the absolute best facility of its kind anywhere in the country.

City Council Speaker Christine Quinn praised the Health Center system in her State of the City address last month, adding that the Freelancers Union, which represents self-employed workers, would build a similar system with the support of government funding.
