Marriott has waged a very sophisticated and expensive avoidance strategy at its two non-union hotels in New York City: the New York Marriott Marquis, its flagship hotel in Times Square, and the Marriott Downtown, located on Albany and West Streets in lower Manhattan. Greta Belizaire, Grand Hyatt
The Union is saddened to learn about the passing of Greta Belizaire, our sister from the Grand Hyatt, where she worked for over 33 years as a housekeeping attendant. Greta passed away on April 9th, 2020.
Local 6 Vice President Hazel Hazzard recalls Greta being a quiet lady, very respectful, who possessed poise and grace, and who was liked by everyone.

What the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire means for workers today.
In states nationwide, working people are protesting the actions to strip them of collective bargaining. The Triangle fire and the Upper Big Branch explosion a century later make clear to me that workers want and need that voice. Collective bargaining still means a seat at the table to discuss issues such as working conditions, workplace safety and workplace innovation, empowering individuals to do the best job they can. And it means dignity and a chance for Americans to earn a better life.

NYC Council Approves Hotel Worker Severance Bill 40 to 3
On Thursday, September 23rd, the New York City Council voted overwhelmingly to pass the Hotel Worker Severance Bill. The bill, designed to incentivize closed hotels to reopen, requires closed hotels with at least 100 guest rooms to either reopen and recall at least 25% of their staff by November 1st or pay $500 per week to laid off employees for up to 30 weeks. Groundbreaking for the New Queens Health Center Takes Place

The groundbreaking for the new Queens Health Center took place on January 15. When it opens in 2021 it will be the most advanced facility of its kind, surpassing even the Brooklyn Health Center, which has drawn rave reviews from members and medical professionals alike. Present for the groundbreaking were Mayor Bill de Blasio, Comptroller Scott Stringer, City Council President Corey Johnson, City Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer and other representatives of New York City government, the Hotel Association and the union.
