When I announced to the General Officers and Executive Boards of HTC and Local 6 and the Local 6 Delegate Assembly that I had decided to retire, I recommended that Rich Maroko be appointed to fill my vacant offices. I explained to them the many reasons why I believed Rich’s appointment would be good for our Union.

The purpose of this report is to provide you with the same detailed description of Rich’s biography and career with HTC and Local 6. Most of you who know him, know how hard-fighting and smart he is and how much he cares about our members, but I think it is accurate to assume that you do not have as complete a knowledge of his many accomplishments on behalf of our Union as I have. Saving for College: About 529 Plans

As the cost of college continues to rise annually above the rate of inflation, higher than the annual Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) and faster than the Consumer Price Index (CPI), parents are learning to fight back by establishing 529 college savings plans for their children. These tax shelters have grown enormously in popularity, especially in states like New York where residents have a state income tax to pay in addition to their federal income tax.

1,200 Del Lago Casino workers organize with HTC!

On February 15th, HTC was certified as the collective bargaining representative of 1,200 bargaining unit employees at the new del Lago Resort and Casino in the Finger Lakes Region. The del Lago is the second major casino in New York State to be organized by our union.

The Story of the First Contract

The “Industry-Wide Agreement” (“IWA” for short), is the Hotel Trades Council’s master union contract with the Hotel Association of New York City, Inc. (which is the union of the hotel owners). Today, the IWA covers 28,000 members of the Hotel Trades Council in New York City – the vast majority of our union’s members, including employees of every type of hotel and motel, large and small, not only in the center of Manhattan but throughout New York City, including the outer boroughs.

First 3 days of negotiations in Puerto Rico

Three days of extremely slow and contentious contract negotiations between the Union and Hilton have yielded some significant progress, but have also made clear that the road to a final agreement will be very difficult.
