NY Times honors HTC member Kamal Ahmed

May 20, 2020 6:15 PM

We are very sad to acknowledge the passing of HTC member Kamal Ahmed. As the longtime leader of the Bangladesh Society of NY, Kamal will be remembered for creating "a sense of belonging" for fellow Bangladeshi immigrants. Kamal was a proud union member of 40 years, having worked first as a busboy and later a banquet worker at the Millennium Hilton One UN Plaza.

Kamal’s obituary is part of a New York Times series titled “Those We’ve Lost,” which aims to put names and faces to the growing numbers of those passing away during the current pandemic. Click here to read the full article on the New York Times website.

Sadly, Kamal is one of a number of members who have lost their lives during this difficult time. To read tributes remembering and celebrating the lives of our fellow Union members, click here.

During and throughout this period, Wall Street executives and their counterparts at big banks continued to receive compensation so large that "ordinary people" can only shake their heads in disbelief and disgust. According to an article in the New York Times, stockholders must now be permitted to vote on the compensation of executives at publicly traded companies at least once every three years.

Jackpot! Racino workers see their wages double in first contract

History was made this week when Hotel Trades Council members employed at the Resorts World racino in Queens saw their wages hiked almost 100 percent. The nearly 1,400 workers now have a contract and, with the stroke of an arbitrator’s pen, they saw their earnings rise to a level that brings them into the middle class. It was a story so compelling, it received extensive coverage in New York City’s two biggest newspapers, both of which described the turn of events as “hitting the jackpot.”
