NYC People’s Climate March Draws 400,000

A good-sized group of Hotel Trades Council members was among the crowd of the almost 400,000 people that turned out for the People’s Climate March in the city this week. Members met up at 56th Street and joined the march down to 34th Street in a demonstration of common cause that was more than impressive.

NYC tourism reaches new high in 2010

According to reports in the New York Times, Crain's New York, and NYC.gov, a record 48.7 million people visited New York City this past year, with the result that 2010 was also a record-breaking year for the number of hotel rooms sold. The continued flow of tourists into the city boosted the state's economy by $31 billion and also increased the number of those employed in the hospitality industry to its largest number ever.

Three NYC union hotels certify as “green”

Three New York City hotels, all a part of the NY Hotel Trades Council, have been certified as "green" for their commitment to reduce waste and pollution and to conserve energy and water.

In February, our Union endorsed Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams in his campaign for New York City mayor.

This election may be the most consequential one we’ve faced since we started our Union’s political program 15 years ago. The leaders we elect this year will decide how to rebuild our City’s economy, drive tourism, and reopen the hotel industry after the COVID-19 pandemic. They will have a huge say over how working people – and our members – are treated during the economic recovery. If that weren’t reason enough to take these elections seriously, in all likelihood, whoever wins the mayoral election will also be elected to a second term. Largest NYC hotel project since 2002 announced

Marriott International, Inc. announced it and Granite Broadway Development will together develop a new 68-story, 639-room hotel project in Manhattan. The Marriott news release specifies that the hotel-on-top-of-a-hotel will be 752 feet and 9 inches high, making it the tallest structure of its type in New York City.

State legislators focus on NYC’s illegal “hotels”

Concern continues about owners of apartment buildings who rent out rooms to tourists in buildings occupied in part by resident tenants. State legislators have introduced legislation in the New York State Senate and Assembly that will help the city enforce its laws against these illegal "hotels."
